A minimum of 11 of the weather balloons, containing thousands of packs of contraband cigarettes, have been collected so far

Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.

Aviation Problems

The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.

Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.

Smuggled Items Retrieved

A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.

International Illegal Trade

While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."

Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.

Cross-Border Effects

Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.

Illegal Transport Methods

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."

Regional Security Context

Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.

Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
